You might not realize how much time you spend using the bathroom to get ready for work in the morning and getting ready for bed at night but if your bathroom has less than ideal lighting, you’ve definitely noticed that you don’t enjoy the time you spend in front of the mirror. If you’re sick of brushing your teeth under overly harsh, dim, or dull lights, Billows Lighting and Design can help.
At our Berlin lighting store, we have hundreds and hundreds of lighting options, including pendant lights, chandeliers, sconces, and more, to choose from that allow you to have the bathroom that you’ve always wanted. Whether you envisioned a luxurious space you can use to relax and primp in or a slick and modern bathroom that makes preparing for the day more efficient, we have what you need. Read on for a few tips about how to redesign the lighting in your bathroom to make it your new favorite room in the house!
Lighting the Room
Start lighting the bathroom with a good overhead fixture or two (depending on the size of your bathroom.) You want the room to be nice and bright because it will make getting ready much easier than if you are stumbling around in the dark. You’ll want to install dimmers to make the mood of the room easier to adjust — bright during the day and softer in the evening.
Like any other room of the house, remember to cover the three types of light to ensure that the room is living up to its full potential — general (ambient) lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
The biggest mistake that we see again and again is lights directly over the vanity. Lights that point light directly down like that will cast shadows across your face that makes putting on makeup or shaving almost impossible.
Instead, put a light on each side of your mirror at about eye level. This will light up your face in a way that is more flattering and more helpful when you’re trying to get ready. Keep your task lighting symmetrical — if you add a fixture to only one side of your mirror, you’ll end up casting weird shadows on your face.
Lighting your vanity also allows you to get super creative — we have tons and tons of choices that will look great with any style that you’re trying to go for. There are fixtures with frosted covers that cast the perfect kind of light or you can use some gorgeous LED sconces. Your options are almost limitless and we can help you find what will work best for your bathroom at Billows Lighting and Design!
Shower and Bath Lights
Properly lighting your shower or bathtub can be one of the trickier aspects of bathroom lighting. If you have a smaller bathroom, chances are good that the central fixture in the room will be enough light. If it isn’t or if you have a larger bathroom, you have a lot of options. If your tub is separate from your shower, adding in recessed lights or even a small chandelier can be an interesting possibility. If your shower and tub are a single unit, you still have plenty of choices, the most common of which are water-resistant fixtures that are protected from the condensation and water of the shower.
Small Lighting Details That Make a Big Difference
- Remember to add dimmers so you can easily change the bathroom from a utilitarian room to a space where you can chill out and let the stress of the day disappear.
- Keep your task lighting at eye level to avoid unflattering shadows that make getting ready harder.
- Avoid fluorescent bulbs. They don’t make anyone look good, they can take a long time to kick on, and the sound they make can be annoying to some people. Stick with halogens and LED bulbs in your bathroom for lights that make you look good and use a lot less energy than traditional lights.
- Always have lights in your bathroom installed by a qualified electrician because it means that the job will be done right. Lights use electricity and bathrooms have much more moisture in them than most of the other rooms in your house, so preventing accidents is an absolutely important part of properly lighting a bathroom and a qualified electrician will now how to do that safely.
