Your kitchen is probably one of the rooms that you spend the most time in. Whether you’re cooking, cleaning up after a meal, or just using the kitchen as a hub where you and the rest of the family meet up and then splinter off to get things done for the day, the kitchen is really the heart of the home. Because of how important the kitchen is, it needs to have lighting that works for whatever purpose you’re using it.

Consider exactly how your kitchen will be most often used to figure out what kind of lighting you need. For example, if you cook every single day, you’ll need good task lighting to make sure that every surface you have can be properly utilized to prepare and cook meals. If your kitchen is mostly a hangout zone where you talk and put a frozen pizza in the oven, you’ll need good general lighting. If your kitchen walls are filled with art, you’ll want to have proper accent lighting as well.
Kitchen Task Lighting
Task lighting is the first (and arguably the most important) kind of lighting your kitchen needs. Task lighting is any light that is used to help you accomplish work. In the kitchen, task lighting usually refers to cooking. If you’ve spent any time in a poorly lit kitchen you know just how terrible it can be: bad lighting makes it harder to do everything from cutting up vegetables or reading a recipe to cooking something on the stovetop. With good task lighting you can see everything clearly without being blinded.
Task lighting in a kitchen can take many forms, including under cabinet lights that make the counter space underneath a cabinet usable to small chandeliers that hang over a center island and even pendant lights. Task lighting in your kitchen is very dependant on the size and shape of the room. If you have an open kitchen with tons of natural light, you’ll need fewer fixtures than if your kitchen was windowless and was stuffed to the brim with cabinets.
General Kitchen Lighting
General lighting in a kitchen might seem fairly easy (throw a chandelier here and some track lighting there) but it can be a very difficult room to light. First, you’ll need general lighting in the area where you prepare your food. While task lighting will make prep work easier, general lighting allows you to use the entire space more efficiently as well as providing you with just enough light when you need to do simple work. Second, if you have a breakfast nook or your kitchen island doubles as a seating area, you’ll want to have lighting that makes it comfortable and pleasant to eat and hang out in.
Accent Lighting in Your Kitchen
Accent lighting is the type of lighting that most often gets overlooked when you’re trying to redo the room because we don’t usually think of the kitchen as a room that contains lots of items that you’d traditionally use accent lighting for, e.g. paintings, photos, etc. Just because we don’t normally associate kitchens as being places to hang art, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t spruce up the space if we have the room to do so. Adding a cluster of well-lit photos or a couple pieces of art can really make the kitchen into a space that feels one-in-a-million. We have tons of ways to subtly accent anything you want to hang up in your kitchen, or use fixtures to draw the eye to a gorgeous kitchen table. There’s no limit to what you can do in the kitchen!
As you can see, lighting a kitchen can be pretty intimidating. There are a lot of things to keep in mind while you’re trying to bring the room to life and dropping the ball on even one of them can make a space feel lackluster or even off putting.
