Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is a lighting option that is quickly gaining popularity across the nation. Nearly half of the population has made the switch to LED lighting from traditional incandescent lighting, and in two more years, more than half are predicted to join! LED light bulbs are best known for saving consumers money and for being energy efficient.

Here are 5 fun facts you need to know about LED lighting:
1. LED lighting was first introduced in the 1960s.
The first light bulb classified as LED lighting was invented by Nick Holonyak, Jr., who was working for GE (General Energy) in 1962. On Oct. 9, 1962, he was the first person to operate a visible semiconductor alloy laser, which was the device that lit up the first LED light. Holonyak was 33 at the time of his invention, and he is now 89 years old.
LED lights have steadily increased in popularity since then, and they are predicted to account for 75 percent of all lighting sales by the year of 2030.
2. They contain absolutely no mercury.
Hey environmentally-aware consumers — LED lighting is extremely eco-friendly compared to their lighting alternatives. They don’t contain toxic materials, such as mercury, and about 95 percent of all LED lighting is recyclable!
If every person in America replaced one light bulb with LED lighting, about 7 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced — that’s about the same as removing the gas emissions from about 648,000 cars.
3. They’d last almost three years if you never turned them off.
Most LED light bulbs boast average lifespans of about 25,000 hours, but in newer models, that number can reach up to 100,000 hours! Using the average 25,000, if you never turned off your LED light bulb, it would last you up to three years. For that same amount of time, you’d replace a traditional incandescent light about 20 times (maybe even more).
If you’re an energy efficient consumer, LED lighting can likely last you a lifetime.
4. They’re cooler to touch.
Most LED light bulbs are made of rubberized material rather than traditional glass lighting. This helps when you accidentally touch a light bulb because you won’t get as much of a burning sensation.
LED lighting reaches around 135-140 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas incandescent and halogen light bulbs can reach anywhere between 375 and 700 degrees.
5. They save the American population a lot more money than you’d think.
On average, lighting accounts for about 10 percent of a household’s energy bill. If every American switched just one light bulb to an LED light bulb, about $566 million would be saved!
The U.S. Department of Energy predicts residential and commercial consumers will save around $265 billion over the next 20 years, thanks to the general population switching to this energy efficient type of lighting. Who knew energy efficiency could translate into that large of cost savings? (We did).
